The Astrology of Black Moon Lilith Black Moon Lilith is not a planet or body, but rather a point, and should not be confused with the asteroid, Lilith. You can look up your Black Moon Lilith sign here, and to find its positions through the years, see the Black Moon Lilith ephemeris (along with White Moon Selena, Lilith’s counterpart). Black Moon Lilith is the most commonly used Lilith and is the lunar apogee. To understand the Black Moon Lilith, one first needs to get to grips with how she fits into the bigger picture. The Dark Goddess archetype as a whole is associated with sex, death, obsession, addiction, transformation, resurrection, magic, the occult and the taboo. A female tiger. She is magnificent, powerful. We treat her with respect, awe, carefully so as not to arouse her anger. She can hurt, but we are allowed to stroke her. Somehow she is surrounded by a round enclosure, trapped. A number of male cats come in and rape her. She is covered in blood after the second. After that, she is left encaged, her heart destroyed. Anyone who approaches her is stopped by a terrible, hateful, warning snarl. She is dangerous, ferocious, destructive, defensive. Why such a royal upbringing to be led to this fate? M. Kelley Hunter
The Meaning Of The Black Moon Lilith In Astrology
Lilith is one of the dark goddesses, like Isis, Persephone, Hecate, or Kali, expressing the feminine power of the divine creative, transformative force. If we follow their trail back in time, down to the roots to find the source of their darkness, of the fear and negative side they typically represent in mythologies, we often discover, not only a major shift in the collective human image of the feminine, but also some deep undercurrent, some hidden essence that needs to be acknowledged and healed in our personal lives.
The Black Moon, also called Lilith, is said to be the mother of Adam (of Adam and Eve) and at the same time his lover. But she refused to be his servant only and wanted to be his equal (unlike Eve). And so the Black Moon stands for an independant woman, equal in rights to man, having the same status as a modern western woman as opposed to that of a submissive woman of oriental cultures.
She is not like a mother but rather like a liberated, childless woman, behaving in a very masculine way. She decides whatever she wants to do and acts it out on her own. She loves freedom and wants everything her own way.
The Black Moon is a mixture of Saturn, Uranus and Pluto.
I’m so ugly. They hate me. They cut me out of their lives because I am so whole, because I will not take a back seat, second place. I believe in wholeness and sharing. I undercut you when you’re not being whole, when you cut yourself off, where you seek blood. I give – on my terms, elemental, the one woman before man. Am I the Creator – or the first emerged feminine? There is no difference. I am of that original Heaven. I do not leave it.
In The Book of Lilith, Barbara Koltuv shares her research. One story she relates from the Hebrew mystic tradition – that God made two great lights, the Sun and the Moon, shining with equal brightness. They were not at ease shining together in the same sky. So God said to the Moon, “Go and diminish thyself.” The Moon felt humiliated and asked, “Why should I be as one that veileth herself?” God replied, “Go thy way forth in the footsteps of the flock,” (i.e., following the shepherd).
Since that time, the Moon has had no light of her own, but reflects the light of the Sun. This represents a change in the status of woman, represented in Western cultures by the Moon. She now reflects the light of the Sun, of man, as the consciousness of Eve comes from the rib of man’s body.
It is further told that from the demeaned Moon’s resentment at the loss of her freedom of choice, Lilith is born – a woman down to the waist and flaming fire or a serpent below. In this form, she is sometimes pictured offering Eve the apple in the garden of Eden. Astrological theory postulates a Black Moon. This “moon” occupies the second epicenter in the elliptical orbit of our Moon around the Earth and is an unseen center, an invisible vortex of energy.
Whereas the reflective Moon represents personal subjective feelings, the Black Moon represents a primal, impersonal, creative source which seeks manifestation beyond the material or emotional. This Black Moon is named Lilith. Her energy lures us through whatever our selfish, illusionary dream is in order to purge negative desire and lead us to the truth within our hearts, thereby awakening the deepest desires of the soul.
As part of the Earth-Moon system, Black Moon is a center intimately bound to the center of the Earth. These are the two centers or the double center, around which the Moon orbits. Lilith is a twin to the core energy of the Earth, the deep heart of fire. This is the central fire that feeds and sustains our body and our Earth bodies. The creative vitality of the Sun gives life to the Earth and fuels this central core fire.
Black Moon Lilith takes in the energy of the Sun as well, but she takes it into a different dimension. She is not a manifest energy on the material plane like the Earth. A sister to the Earth, she reminds us of our source on other planes. She is not a physical body, but is in relationship to the physical bodies of the Earth-Moon system. There is a trinity here, of the Earth, the Moon and the Black Moon. Mother Earth, Grandmother Moon and the Holy Spirit.
Another figure in Hebrew mythology is the Shekinah, God’s Beloved, known as Sophia in Gnostic Christianity. She, too, is Wisdom as a feminine aspect of divinity. Later Christians came to call her the Holy Ghost. Imagine Lilith as the deep-rooted Shekinah, like the root of the tree seeking sustenance in the soil, while Sophia is the sky- reaching branches and the fruits. Truly they are one, but as the Judeo-Christian religion elevated the masculine aspect of divinity, they de-spiritualized material, sensual reality. The “lower” Shekinah became unclean, unholy. The Hebrews came into the Sumerian and Babylonian lands, where the Venusian love goddesses Inanna and Astarte were celebrated in a sacred marriage ritual between her priestesses and the kings. In these cultures and as well as in the Celtic culture, it was the goddess who gave the king his power through her love. The religious transition to masculine gods made these rites blasphemous. However, the sacred marriage comes down to us even in the Bible, as Solomon’s Song of Songs.
In Sumerian mythology, the oldest known literature, Lilith was the handmaid to Inanna, goddess of love. Lilith brought the men in from the fields for the sacred rites. In another story, Lilith lives in the tree that Inanna has planted in her garden, the first Garden of Eden. Lilith, with a snake and a large wild bird, dwell in the tree and have knowledge to give Innana, who is not yet ready to accept it. She calls in her brother, Gilgamesh, to get rid of the creatures and cut down the tree for her throne and bed. This myth was developed by Dragon Dance Theater in Vermont, USA into a creation play called The Huluppu Tree.
Lilith is a dark goddess who speaks from deep feminine attunement to the mysteries, the life-death-rebirth cycle of the Great Round. The source of her wisdom and power is hidden, subtle and sacred. Like a flute player serenading a cobra, she pulls up the energy from deep within the Earth, and we are pulled down into our soul selves to meet it. At the invisible second center of the Moon’s orbit around Earth stands the Dark Goddess, She Who Knows the Way, She Who Sees in the Dark. We must trust her, for we have no choice.
Lilith challenges both women and men to connect with their instinctive passion for life, for this natural force denied, unfulfilled, caged or exiled, turns destructive. Her voice is crying out very strongly now around the world – in Somalia, Bosnia, in the stormy weather, volcanoes, tidal waves, hurricanes, fires. Lilith came to me in another dream, this time in her serpent form. I share this dream to honor the healing power re-emerging from the depths of Earth herself for our shared awakening.

The Black Moon Lilith keywords are:
Individuality, independance, “not wanting to be together with”, someone who says “NO”, detachment, silence (non communication), wild, sacrifice, ideals, unreachable, perfection, strict, fascination, solitude, secrecy.
Lilith wants perfection and cannot accept compromises. She is very demanding with herself and others and she knows clearly what she wants. She cannot adapt to others and she will stick to her ideals.
The Astronomical Meaning of Black Moon
Another meaning of the Black Moon is derived from astronomical facts : it is a place of void, a focus of emptiness related to the moon’s path in the sky.
That is why the Black Moon also stands for the feelings of wanting and not getting, unsatisfied desire, everlasting feeling of incompleteness, of things being not like they should be, feelings of beeing estranged from home, of lacking essential things or persons.

Is the Black Moon Important For Me?
Lilith is important in your chart if it is found withing 10 degrees of the angles or of the ruler of your rising sign and/or if it makes a conjunction or an opposition to any of the major planets. Otherwise it should be considered as a mild influence only.
Three Different Liliths
The “Black Moon Lilith” is not the same as the “asteroid Lilith” or the “Dark Moon Lilith”
Meaning Of Lilith In Astrology
1LILITH THE ASTEROID
(1181 on astro.com). The glyph for Lilith the asteroid is a straight horizontal line with 4 small vertical lines sticking up from it, sort of like an upturned rake head, and then on the right below the horizontal line is a very small mark like a capital L (or in some cases a V). Some say it is an upturned hand. When you are writing about the asteroid you can just say Lilith. It takes about 5 years for Lilith to travel through all 12 signs, since it does retrograde a lot.
2 BLACK MOON LILITH
(h13 on astro.com). What is BML? Black Moon Lilith is a point in the moon’s orbit. It is not a body in the sky. It is the lunar apogee, the farthest point that the Moon gets from Earth. Black Moon Lilith moves 40 deg 40 min. per year, or about 3 deg. 23 min per month. It takes about 9 years to complete one pass through all 12 signs. The glyph is a black third quarter Moon with a black cross below. The tips of the Black Moon point to the right.
3 DARK MOON LILITH
(h58 on astro.com) This is a “second moon” to the Earth. It is a non-reflective body(hence the name Dark Moon) that orbits the Earth about every 119 days. It was first sighted in the 1600’s. Dr. Georges Waltemath, a German astronomer, was the first to document it in 1898. His calculations are the correct ones and can be found in Solar Fire as Dark Moon W’math. To find it, have a chart on the screen, click on Reports, then on Other Bodies. The glyph is a circle or zero with a diagonal line like a forward slash, cutting through it. In writing use Dark Moon Lilith at first, then Dark Moon or DML to avoid confusion.
Lilith: A Monologue
You wonder: who am I coming at you like your shadow?
I am black but comely, O Daughters of Earth.
Joy is my sister. Sister I to Death.
I am the first and I am the last.
I am the honored one and I am the scorned one.
I am the whore and the holy one.
I am the substance and the one who has no substance.
I sleep on the earth and I dance in the trees.
I lie in the sands and I fly on the breeze.
I walk in the sun and I drink with the bees.
I sing with the rocks and I do as I please.
You have summoned me with your desires.
There are things you need to know about Love and Creation.
What can I know about Love, you ask?
I seduce, I destroy, I have no heart?
Those are lies. Lies they tell about me now.
Lies they might tell about you later.
I live in the tree of life, with the serpent in the roots
and the thunderbird of enlightenment in its branches.
Why are you afraid of me, afraid of the tree?
What is inside of you is outside of you
And what you see outside is what is inside of you.
It is visible and it is your garment.
How beautiful are thy feet in shoes, O Daughters of the Moon!
I am wild, like the wind! Yes!
Thy navel is like a round goblet filled with wine.
Thy belly is like a heap of wheat set about with lilies.
I sleep in the desert. I live in trees. I kiss serpents. Yes!
Thy two breasts are like two young deer that are twins.
Thy neck is as a tower of ivory.
Thine eyes like the fishpools by the white harbor.
My passions are boundless, untamed. Yes!
My passions are the same as yours.
Feel your passion. Let it fill you. Let it fill you with your power.
And you, Man, Hero, still two-thirds god!
Do you remember me?
Do you remember what we once were to each other?
Do you remember the love that we shared?
I long for a mate, thirsty like water.
Come to me, I need your seed
Or I wither and die, no fruit in my branches.
I want all of you.
I draw you in to meet me,
All-surrendered, all-potent, all-consuming
To the altar of fire.
Why do you resist me?
Is it because I am stronger than you
In the darkness of the night?
You say I am an illusion, like a dream.
Poor fool, I am no dream.
I offer you rapture and peace for your sterile pride.
You deny and question,
But mine eyes gleam on thee, lit with an alien light.
My lips proclaim mysteries.
My arms hold all that gods desire and fools reject.
Yes, I am tempting you. I am temptation.
Glory in the temptation of knowledge, O Adam,
I am your salvation.
You must give yourself to me,
Give your sins to me.
I will take you beyond sin.
I am the door to the garden.
But I will not submit to you and be put beneath you,
Like a serving maid.
He conquers me who dares to pay my price.
I ask too much, you say?
Yet I give all.
Why do you reject my love?
Watch out, you man, I warn you.
When I leave, you will fall asleep
And your rib will be taken out for your mate.
You banish me, but you will be cast out from the garden
And struggle to be reborn.
I will return to remind you of what you really want.
How you feel broken with a mate who is part of you,
Like a crutch.
And you, Woman, watch out for the Hero.
One day he may turn against you and call you whore.
But until that day,
I will bring the men from the fields
To the temple for the holy rites of love.
Until that day,
When the fertile crescent is burning
With the raging fires of war,
And the Earth is dying from the poisons of the weapons.
I go now, but you will hear my voice
In the wailing of women mourning their dead children,
In the howling winds and the hurricanes,
The earthquakes and the volcanoes!

Mobile App View
By default we assume you are viewing this page using a mobile device and provide a lightweight app showing you the positions of the planets today and 30 days into the past and future. However you can select to view the page using our desktop version which uses more CPU and has more features but is fiddly to use on a small screen.
You can also watch a video of the planet positions using our yearly planetary alignment videos.
Desktop App Version
With our desktop app, you can rewind time to see the heavens at the time of your birth and discover for yourself which sign each planet was in and which were in retrograde. However, please be aware that although the positions of the planets shown are accurate, they are not to the second by second precision of the charts that astrologers normally use.
How do I control the desktop app?
Most of the controls are reasonably obvious - especially if you play with them. The top slider allows you to control how time moves so you can speed forwards and backwards in time. Pressing the yellow button by the slider puts it into real time so the planets move as quickly on the screen as they are in space. So it's not to difficult to rewind time to the time of your birth to see the planets as they were. If you need to get the display back to show the planets as they are today and now, then press the yellow button next to the date time display at the top. For full information on all the app controls, click here.
The view above shows all the planets arranged around the Earth as if they were in located on a sphere with the earth in the centre - a geocentric view. This ensures all planets are shown in the correct zodiac sign.
Which Planets are in retrograde?
Planets glow as they go into retrograde. You may find that planets were on the cusp of retrograde at the time of your birth, in which case you may need to consult accurate charts to see exactly when retrograde phase started. Or indeed if the planet was in a stopped phase either side of retrograde.
Astrology Today - What does it all mean for me?
Astrology is a very wide subject with many many layers of interpretation required to understand all the meanings provided by a persons natal chart (where all the planets were at their precise time of birth) in conjunction with the positions of the planets today, or at a time of importance for that person.
There are also various schools which use slightly different methods and ways of measuring the planets in order to make predictions and give advice.
The following is a very brief overview of western astrology to give you an idea of how it works without touching too much on areas of contention with the astrology world. If you are more interested in the Indian (also known as Vedic or Hindu) system, then take a look at our Hindu Astrology page.
If you have half an hour to spare, this very informative video explains many of the concepts and symbology behind modern western astrology.
What is a Horoscope?
Although we generally take 'a horoscope' to mean an astrologers prediction of our future. It actually means an astrological chart or diagram representing the positions of the Sun, Moon, planets, astrological aspects, and sensitive angles at the time of an event, such as the moment of a person's birth. The word 'horoscope' is derived from Greek words hora and scopos meaning 'time' 'observer'
Once it has been worked out, the horoscope provides the basis for divining many aspects of that event or related events or time periods.
The signs of the Zodiac
The sky is divided up into 12 areas - the 12 signs of the zodiac. Each of these signs covers an equal area of the sky and is aligned to the stars. (Over millennia the zodiac moves with respect to the stars as the earth's axis precesses - but it's best to ignore this whilst learning the basics). So when looking at the sky, the stars are fixed when compared with the zodiac, but the planets, as they orbit the sun, change position and 'wander' about. Astrology tries to use the movements of the stars to understand our personalities and to some extent control our destinies. Each of the 12 signs is also associated with an element (earth, air, fire and water) and also a mode (cardinal, fixed and mutable). More about this later.
Each of the planets (which for astrology includes the sun and the moon) control a different aspect. In general terms they can be listed as:
Sun = Ego / Self
Moon = Emotion / Moods
Mercury = Communication / Thinking
Venus = Harmony / Affections
Mars = Confidence / Energy
Jupiter = Prosperity / Good Fortune
Saturn = Limitations / Practicality
Uranus = Individuality / Inventiveness
Neptune = Idealism / Compassion
Pluto = Transformation / Power
The Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars are the personal planets which affect our personalities and immediate relationships. The more distant planets affect how we interact with the world in a more general way.
When planets are in retrograde (e.g. they appear to be traveling backwards to their normal motion in the sky) their effect can be reversed to be directed inwards. When they again start to move forward again their effect can be enhanced.
Planets and Signs
Each planet is the ruler of a particular sign (or signs). Whilst in that sign the planets influence is enhanced. The rulerships for each of the planets are as below:
|Mercury||Gemini and Virgo|
|Venus||Libra and Taurus|
|Mars||Aries (and* Scorpio)|
|Jupiter||Sagittarius (and* Pisces)|
|Saturn||Capricorn (and* Aquarius)|
* before the invention of telescopes, these signs were also assigned to these planets. Since telescopes the three outer planets have been discovered and assigned these signs.
This information is useful since if you know what influence a planet has, then you will know what influence that signs ruled by that planet have.
Signs are allocated a different element in turn. This means that every fourth sign has the same element as follows:
Fire Signs : Aries, Leo, Sagittarius
Earth Signs: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn
Air Signs : Gemini, Libra, Aquarius
Water Signs : Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces What does a blue moon signify.
Fire signs represent a persons passion, energy, enthusiasm, inspiration.
Earth signs represent a persons practicality, stability, materialism, realism.
Air signs represent language, intellect, communication and social relationships.
Water signs represent emotion, mysticism, intuition.
Generally speaking, the more planets someone has in a particular sign at the time of their birth, the stronger that signs personality traits will be in them.
Rather like elements, each sign also has a mode allocated to it. Every 3rd sign has the same mode as follows:
Cardinal Signs: Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn
Fixed Signs: Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius
Mutable Signs: Gemini. Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces
Cardinal signs are energetic, dynamic and proactive.
Fixed signs are persistence, perseverant, stable.
Mutable signs are flexible, changeable, adaptable, suggestible.
Again, the more planets you have in a particular Mode, the more your personality has those traits.
Working out the planets influences?
It takes quite a lot of skill to determine one's personality traits accurately. However, a simple rule of thumb is to count at the time of birth how many planets fall in each sign and then work out how many are in each element and mode (perhaps counting the sun and moon as 2 due to their extra influence). The greater the score for each indicates how much of an influence each element and mode are on that person.
What are the Houses
Just when you thought you might have got some sort of a grip on astrology, in come the houses. Whereas signs indicate what personality traits one has, houses indicate where they will exhibited themselves.
Like the signs, there are 12 houses which divide up the sky. However the alignment of the houses is defined by the position of the horizon on the time of your birth. This means in order to calculate the houses, one must know not only what date one was born but also what time (to within a few minutes) and at what location on earth.
If one were to the set the application above to the time of ones birth and then set the lat and long to the place of ones birth, then the lowest slider will then bring up a display of the horizon at that time and location. Using this horizon one can ascertain how the houses are defined.
The first house is located just under the western horizon, and the others follow consecutively in an anti-clockwise direction - e.g. the first 6 are in the black area (below the horizon), the last 6 are in the sky area (above the horizon). Once one knows where the houses lie, one can again see which sign lies in which house. Since there are 12 signs and 12 houses one can see that normally each house will overlay parts of 2 signs. The sign used is the sign which overlays the cusp of the house. The lines which separate each of the houses are called the cusps. The cusp of a house is the line preceding.

Many modern astrologers assume that the houses relate to their corresponding signs, i.e. that the first house has a natural affinity with the first sign, Aries, and so on.
And there's more..
The houses can also be classified as Angular, Succedent and Cadent and are ruled by signs according to the astrological modality. And.. well there are many many more aspects to astrology which seem almost designed to confuse and complicate.
As you can see, astrology is not a simple area of study. The above is just skimming the surface of a subject that could (and does) take up volumes and volumes of books. There are many systems of astrology and many variations between individual astrologers that use the same basic principles. Some astrologers also use astronomical objects which have never been seen by the unaided eye (such as chiron - an asteroid/comet cross discovered in 1977) and others objects that have never even been detected. Some prefer to align the zodiac to the night time sky as seen by astrologers hundreds or thousands of years ago - such as in the Hindu Astrology system.
All in all, with astrology today, one must pick and choose the astrologer and the style of astrology that suits one best.
